Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is on the right bank of the Tague in the Estremadura region. This lively, romantic capital city lies 45 km from Salvaterra and is characterized by a lot of history and beautiful views. The best place to get to know Lisboa, as the Portuguese call their capital, is the terrace on top of the statue of Christ King, on the southern bank of the Tague.

From the top of the statue you see an endless series of squares, quays, buildings, the famous Monument of the Discoveries and Torre de Belem (see photo). A typical delicacy is the Pastel de Belém. Dit zijn kleine pasteitjes, die anderhalve eeuw geleden door monniken werden uitgevonden. These are small pies were invented by monks half a century ago. They have a creamy filling and are sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar they are delicious accompanied by a local Muscatel wine.

A stroll through the charming Alfama district is a must. This popular neighbourhood is located on the eastern side of the centre of Lisbon, sloping up to the São Jorge hill. This is a maze of narrow, winding streets, gates and stairs. Coloured facades with wavy laundry and numerous flower pots complete the idyllic picture of this district. Here you find no fancy shops only local women selling fish on the streets, small alleys and hidden 'secret'  courtyards.

In this specific area you also find typical Portuguese fado houses. These are small restaurants where traditional fadoten are to be heard. Arriving at the top of the hill, in Castelo de São Jorge, is a romantic spot with unforgettable views. In the courtyard of the ruins is a quiet, shady park with a few fountains. The beautiful panoramic view over the entire city is more than worthwhile climbing for but can also be reached with one of the traditional trams.
